Reel FX, the award winning studios, has come on board as the virtual reality partner of this year’s party, leveraging Radiant Images and VRLIVE’s innovative streaming and stitching technology to allow viewers worldwide to tap into the party action via mobile app VRLIVE. The 360-degree live-stream of the party will allow viewers to choose between two viewpoints: one placing them in the Austin agency’s backyard for a wide view of the bash and another providing an interior perspective of the pop-up art installations and interactive exhibits.

The VRLIVE 360-degree video experience can be viewed directly on any smartphone via the mobile app or with a VR head-mounted display (Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, etc.) Virtual partygoers can download the VRLIVE app prior to the event and tune into the live 360-degree feed when the festivities begin on Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. CST.

“Since the birth of our party six years ago, we’ve focused on bringing the unique and creative aspects of Austin’s culture to our backyard to fully immerse our guests in what makes our city so great,” said David Rockwood, VP of community relations at GSD&M. “Technology is an important piece of Austin’s culture, so partnering with Reel FX brings an interactive and engaging experience to our guests, and lets those outside city limits experience the atmosphere and excitement of SXSW.”

“Reel FX is excited to bring Virtual Reality to GSD&M’s sixth-annual event. Through the innovative technology of Radiant Images and VRLIVE, we are going to give not just attendees, but audiences around the world the chance to experience the event in 360 degrees for the first time,” added Reel FX Executive Producer Steve Johnson.

Notes Radiant Images’ Michael Mansouri, “I’m excited to showcase such a versatile and innovative VR solution with partners like Reel FX and GSD&M, which are just as versatile and innovative in their approach to virtual reality.”

Virtual reality at the event will not just be limited to the app. Additionally, GSD&M is adding a new VR element to its GSD&M Presents video series, which annually recap the live music, interactive experience and overall celebration of the bash. This year, for the first time, the video will feature a VR aspect shot by Reel FX VR.

Having created VR projects for the likes of AT&T, American Express, Lionsgate, Porsche, Samsung and GE, among numerous others, Reel FX – led by Executive Producer Steve Johnson – worked closely with GSD&M and Radiant Images’ Michael Mansouri to incorporate this cutting edge technology into one of the biggest parties of the week.
