Cinequest Film & VR Festival Showcases Artistry w/ Cutting Edge VR and AR Experiences
Cinequest, a vanguard organization that fuses creativity with technological innovation to empower, improve, and transform the lives of people and communities, today announced the details of its virtual reality (VR) program at its international celebration of the filmed arts, the Cinequest Film & VR Festival.
The Silicon Valley’s premier convergence of technology, innovation and artistry, Cinequest celebrates the impact of tech in evolving the creation, consumption and distribution of entertainment for creators and audiences alike. From March 1st – 4th, Cinequest will showcase the union of creativity and tech, artistry and engineering, with an unparalleled selection of VR cinema programs, immersive experiences, workshops with luminaries in this emerging medium, culminating in a presentation of 19 awards for VR content on the final day of Cinequest, March 11th, 2018.
Festival First: Opening Night 360 Livestream by Samsung
Continuing its commitment to spotlighting emerging technologies that enhance the way entertainment is created, consumed and distributed, Cinequest has partnered with Samsung for a 360 livefeed of its opening night conversation with legendary actor William H. Macy, who directed the opening night film, Krystal. From Cinequest’s home in the tech capitol of Silicon Valley, and broadcast live in 360 from the gorgeous, renovated 1920s era movie mecca, the California Theatre, film fans from around the globe will be able to experience the energy and excitement of Cinequest from a ‘virtual’ front row seat.
Hollywood meets Hi-Tech: Featured VR Cinematic Selections
In a selection of twenty-nine VR films and interactive experiences, early VR adopters and newcomers can experience outstanding cinematic and immersive content that spans an astounding array of genres, themes, settings and realities, during Cinequest’s VR program running March 1 – March 4.
This year’s selections includes three immersive works that feature Cinequest Maverick Spirit Award honorees, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, and this year’s Cinequest VR Visionary honoree, Travis Cloyd. Cage and Cloyd will discuss their collaboration on The Humanity Bureau VRevolution during the Nicolas Cage Maverick Spirit Award Event (February 28th), joined onstage by director Rob W. King and producer Kevin DeWalt.
A connector and conduit between the fields of film and tech, Cloyd will presents works at the festival’s VR Cinema program that meld the star-power of Hollywood with astounding technology:
The Humanity Bureau VRevolution (World Premiere)
Starring Nicolas Cage, this dystopian thriller set in the near future sees the world facing serious environmental problems as the result of global warming. The standalone episodic virtual reality series will release on March 2nd, followed by the theatrical film release of the sci-fi action-thriller,

Speed Kills VR Experience
Starring Maverick Spirit Award recipient John Travolta and Katheryn Winnick, speedboat racing champion and multimillionaire Ben Aronoff (Travolta) leads a double life that lands him in trouble with both the law and drug lords. The Recall VR Abduction
Starring Wesley Snipes in his virtual reality debut, five friends vacation at a remote lake house, expecting nothing less than a good time – unaware that planet Earth is under an alien invasion and mass-abduction. Directed by Mauro Borrelli and Josh Courtney. Produced by Travis Cloyd, Josh Courtney, Kevin DeWalt, Danielle Masters, Rob Bryanton and Wesley Snipes. Virtual and Augmented Reality Workshops
Cinequest’s Workshops will inspire and educate VR and AR content creators with practical discussions and explorations of leading edge VR and AR technological breakthroughs, and the opportunities in this emerging medium. Between educational sessions, guests can access the VR Experience Lounge to sample VR games and adventures, ranging from otherworldly to awe-inspiring.
