Body Labs To Build Body Scan Database For Developers – Body As Digital Interface
Body Labs, founded in 2013, is a New York City based 3D body modeling, scanning and human body shape analyzing specialist – had received $8 million series A funding round led by Intel Capital.
Additional investors includes FirstMark Capital, Max-Planck-Innovation GmbH, Osage University Partners, and Catalus Capital.
Body Labs Funding Support According To Bill O’Farrell
The funding support will be used to grow the company and to work on a big project that Body Labs co-founder and CEO Bill O’Farrell had envisioned. O’Farrell wants to build a body scan database for developers. The vision will now be put into action with the funding, and would be supported by Body Labs’ custom built product and tools as follows:
- BodyHub: A cloud-based platform to rapidly process, safely store and efficiently access the world’s body model
- BodyKit: A collection of APIs and embeddable components providing the easiest and most powerful way to build apps and tools surrounding the human body
- BodySnap: Leverage the Microsoft Kinect and BodySnap to easily create 3D body models from anywhere
Body Labs technology has exclusive licensing agreements with Brown University, where its technology was originally developed, and the Max Planck Institute’s Perceiving Systems Group, where continued advances in the body modeling area are being made.
The funding announcement was made at the Intel Capital Global Summit in San Diego, where O’Farrell appeared onstage with leading technology and finance experts to discuss the opportunities created by disruptive business models.
“For the first time in human history, our technology makes it possible to automatically, accurately and cost-effectively deliver human shape as a digital platform. Forward-looking companies can now confidently design and deliver products and services that are specifically suited for their customers’ particular body shapes. Mass customization around human body shape is fast becoming a reality, and we are playing a vital role in how goods and services are designed, manufactured, bought, sold and recommended.” Bill O’Farrell, co-founder and CEO of Body Labs.
“To enable a developer to build an application his or her self we have to build body scanning more rigorously into the API,” said O’Farrell. What’s prevented Body Labs from nurturing its API is a flush of money generating projects for corporate clients. The work is keeping Body Labs in business, but keeping it from delivering on its big vision. To make its API more compelling, Body Labs needed more resources.” ( Via Venture Beat )
“Body Labs’ technology is designed to make possible significant advancements in body imaging and customization. They are commercializing this innovative technology and making it more accessible than ever.” Director Sanjit Dang led the investment for Intel Capital. ” Mark Yahiro, Managing Director of New Business for Intel’s Perceptual Computing group.
Body Labs has an interesting interpretation of human body for the future, according to Body Labs, human body will be the next digital platform, a medium and interface for interactions with advanced technologies, and of course, that includes virtual and augmented reality!
Potential Applications Of 3D Body Modeling & Scanning
There are already a handful of companies that provides affordable 3D modeling applications for consumers, including Seene, RealSense, Google Tango, Microsoft Kinect and Occipital Structure. The 3D modeling technology that provides affordable depth sensing and precise mesh construction of human body will revolutionize many industries including:
Fashion & Cloth Retailing: Imagine you can have a 3D body scan and have your cocktail suit made to fit your physique in absolute perfection, possibly eliminating the need for a tailor to measure your body when you want to have a bespoken suit made at Savil Row in the UK.
Research & Science: Researcher and scientists can use 3D body model database to analyze human body scientifically, and use the big data to create useful product.
Health & Well-being: An affordable 3D scanned body tool or application can be used to monitor and keep track of your personal dieting and body-sculpting progress. Dr. can use the 3D body models to analyze and correct one’s body posture.
Sport Training: Dr. can customize a sports inqury protection or posture correction suit for athletes and patients.
