POV Porn Forecast & Reaching the Mainstream Market?
To many, POV Porn probably still feels like far from the future, but in fact, since it kickstarted in 2014, the industry has grown into one of the most popular and profitable sector both in virtual reality and adult entertainment industries.
According to Pornhub, the world’s largest porn site, that the number of views generated from its POV porn section has increased up to 275% since its initial launch back in 2016. With a whooping monthly average of 500k views. If you haven’t tried VR porn here are two sites to get you started: Just VR Porn is the world’s most complete immersive adult website directory, and VR Porn Times is a premium adult site featuring top adult VR videos.
Big players in worldwide adult entertainment industry such as Naughty America, Vivid Entertainment, Badoink and most niche-oriented company such as Kink, all have already launched their own spinoff POV VR division to secure a place in the ongoing POV pov market share race, not to mention more than 50+ studios around the world are releasing new adult POV VR content on weekly basis. The industry is booming, and seemed very promising.
However, even though, POV porn’s initial success proves that POV VR porn is one of the earliest virtual reality sectors that is monetization, and is helping to drive the industry forward, just as adult entertainment industry once did with World Wide Web and VHS, people from VR and adult industry are somehow skeptical about POV porn’s future potential and monetization/business model sustainability, because in fact, there are numbers of POV porn studios that had already failed and ran out of business.
The spoke woman from Cam4VR, and POV porn actress Ela Darlin, and the director from KinkVR put it quite frankly:
“I think that for a while we hit this point with VR where everybody knew it’s going to be something. Everybody knew it was going to be great eventually so investors just started throwing money at VR companies,” said Ela Darling, VR content manager at Cam4VR, adding, “A lot of it it with the idea that will probably take hold. I think that the down side to that is there were companies that had cool ideas or some cool technology but no monetization strategy. Most had no big goal posts to hit with regards to users or things that could really provide a return on that investment.”
“In the adult industry there have been people who put a lot of money into it right at the beginning. Now they are a little afraid. They are not seeing any ROI or a full return on their investment,” alias Fivestar director at Kink said.
While many production studios and potential investors are hesitating to invest more capitals into VR adult content production, Naughty America VR is not slowing down, and has been consistently putting out premium and high quality new contents. CIO from Naughty America shared his vision, and his optimistic view towards POV VR Porn.
“VR is the biggest niche since MILF,” Naughty America Chief Information Officer Ian Paul said. “If you want to write it off as just a niche, and it arguably still is a niche, it’s a huge niche. It’s a niche that’s on fire. So it’s a force to be reckoned with, and it needs to be watched very very carefully, because it can easily go from being the biggest niche to the mainstream, to the dominant force in the industry, just like that.”
“Pornography has played a key role in the development of new and emerging technologies – from the stereoscope in the 1800s through home video and now virtual reality,” said Matthew Wood, who was also involved in the Newcastle research. “But what VR offers for the first time is the opportunity to move from being simply an observer to being a participant and this changes the experience massively.
The main obstacles for POV porn to really take off and reach the mainstream consumer market is the limited number of VR headset owners, and as spec of VR headset improves dramatically, system requirement and unit price both dropping. The future seems very optimistic.
“There is ton of money being pumped into VR still and it’s being pumped into computers, graphic cards and experiences are becoming more compelling. And it’s just there, it’s happening. We are kind of on the precipice of it becoming a huge medium.” Director from KinkVR
While there could be a while until POV porn reaches mainstream consumer market, a forecast estimates the VR/AR total revenues will grow up to $13.9 billion in 2017 to $143 billion by 2020. Another forecast predicts POV Porn will become a gigantic $1 billion industry by 2025 placed right after VR games and the NFL in popularity and market share.
