ARTIST MEL CHIN PARTNERS WITH MICROSOFT TO PRESENT MIXED REALITY EXPERIENCE

Artist Mel Chin unveiled a Mixed Reality experience Unmoored and Wake, in partnership with Times Square Arts, No Longer Empty, Queens Museum and Microsoft.

Unmoored explores a potential future of melting ice caps and rising oceans filling Times Square. Developed in collaboration with Microsoft, Unmoored allows guests to to explore a submerged Times Square in mixed reality using the Microsoft HoloLens, or on their mobile phones to access an augmented reality experience.

The augmented reality experience will submerge an iconic stretch of New York City under water, imagining a world where climate change has gone unchecked and bringing the sculptural works of ships and sea-creatures to life through digital interaction.

The public works will be active July 11 to September 5 at the Broadway Plaza between 46th Street and 47th Street as part of the multi-location exhibition Mel Chin: All Over the Place. Visitors will be invited to engage with the sixty-foot animatronic installation Wake, which evokes the hull of a 19th century shipwreck crossed with the skeletal remains of a marine mammal.

Viewers can simultaneously explore the blending of physical and digital worlds with Unmoored through a Microsoft HoloLens headset (July 11 – 13) or mobile device (July 11 – September 5).
