The film premiered in Montreal on April 22nd, 2010, and was written and directed by Robert Lepage, and was award “Unique Theatrical Experience” in the 2013 New York Drama Desk Award. TOTEM’s theme describes an evolution of humanity from primordial, amphibian states towards the aspiration of flight, combining interest and inspiration from myth found in humanity.

TOTEM’s production team faced challenges to design a show that is unique to previous production. All of Cirque du Soleil’s previous touring productions were originally created to be hosted and performed inside a grand chapiteau (large custom designed tent), but many of these tours have been restaged in arenas after the tours.
