ImmersiveTouch Virtual Reality Impresses at ADT Conference in Tokyo

ImmersiveTouch Inc., the leader in virtual reality medical technology, introduced a new surgical planning software suite for craniomaxillofacial surgeons at the ADT (Advanced Digital Technology in Head & Neck Reconstruction) Conference in Tokyo.

The solution, called ImmersiveView Surgical Plan (IVSP), combines ImmersiveTouch’s expertise in medical imaging, surgical simulation and virtual reality. The software suite saves surgeons time by providing them with an intuitive way to plan craniomaxillofacial cases on their own without needing time with a biomedical engineer. With IVSP, the surgeon uses an interactive 3D virtual reality model of a patient’s anatomy to create a patient-specific surgical plan. When they’re done, they send this plan to ImmersiveTouch, where a dedicated biomedical engineer transfers the plan to the operating room with the help of accurate 3D printed guides and templates.

Today, in a growing number of hospitals, surgeons are using IVSP to rehearse a patient’s operation on a virtual 3D model of the patient’s anatomy before the operation begins. The surgeon now has the ability to practice the procedure in virtual reality before actually operating on the patient’s body. By doing so, the doctor can test and refine surgical techniques, learn the nuances of the patient’s unique anatomy, and anticipate difficulties that may arise during the operation. With VR both the surgeon and the patient goes into surgery feeling prepared and confident.

“Prior to surgery, the surgeon can learn a patient’s anatomy inside and out, plan his mission, and rehearse the operation so that the surgeon performs more efficiently and with greater accuracy and precision,” says Jay Banerjee, CEO of ImmersiveTouch.

“IVSP allows us to cross that 2D glass barrier into the other side, where we can shrink to microscopic size and go inside the patient’s anatomy similar to what they envisioned in the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage,” said Pravin K. Patel, M.D., chief of pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgery at the University of Illinois Heath & Medical Science Center.
