Matterport: Virtual Camera For Real Estate Agents

Founded in 2011, Matterport is a Silicon Valley technology company that makes it easy for anyone to create immersive cloud-based 3D models of real-world spaces that can be experienced, changed, and shared online. Yesterday, the company released their new app, Matterport 3D Showcase, for the Samsung Gear VR.

Matterport Pro 3D camera is a 3D imaging device (currently priced at $4,500 USD) that is geared towards the professional real estate photographers. The Matterport software allow consumers to experience and interact with the media in 3D.

In the near future, mobile devices will also be equipped to run Matterport 3D Capture software, which will make thing much more affordable for people like you and me. The Matterport Cloud processes the data collected and then makes the content accessible via websites URL or as embedded WebGL.

Earlier this year, Matterport showcased the first complete photo-realistic room reconstruction using a Google Tango device and has been working on a production version of its mobile 3D Capture app, capable of creating 3D models of spaces or objects in real time or in the cloud, for release with the first set of Tango tablets.

Matterport was awarded the grand prize at the FWD Innovation Summit, sponsored by Realogy Franchise Group, the largest franchisor of residential and commercial real estate brokerage offices in the world. Realogy brands include Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, Century 21, Coldwell Banker, ERA, NRT, and Sotheby’s International Realty.

The company just raised 16 million USD in series B financing to lead 3D expansion. The funding will allow Matterport to continue to drive innovation in both professional-class 3D solutions and future consumer-targeted mobile 3D media and apps.
